Join us this holiday season for a variety of hands-on and “ears-on” activities and events that allow inquiring minds of all ages to examine the natural world through the sense of sound.  
 

Daily Activities Include: 

  • Sounds of Utah: Sounds unique to Utah can tell us stories about it’s creatures and habitats. Discover some of the best sound stories Utah’s natural world has to offer. 
  • Community Art:  Listen to different soundscapes found in Utah and draw what you hear. Your interpretation will become part of a Museum mural on display in the Canyon.
  • Sound Play! Experiment with different ways of making sound; use whirly tubes and tuning forks to explore the physical science of sound.

  • Wednesday, December 26: Phun with Physics - Experiments that demonstrate the basic principles of sound.
  • Thursday, December 27: Chickadee Society - Explore the different sounds Utah's bugs make with "ears-on" activities.
  • Saturday, December 29: Meet the Birds - Hawk Watch will discuss what bird experts know about raptor calls and how scientists use their sense of sound to help count birds here in Utah. 
  • Friday, January 4: Scientist in the Spotlight with Entomologist Christy Bills - Listen to the sounds of insects from all over the world from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
  • Saturday, January 5: Utah Opera performs highlights of it’s upcoming production of Florencia en el Amazonas here at the Museum.
  • Saturday, January 5:  Explore the human voice with researchers from The National Center for Voice and Speech between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.  Make a spectrogram of your own voice and compare it to an opera singer's or a Broadway singer's voice. Discover how research on animal voices is helping us better understand the human voice.
