Volunteers

We are committed to providing a safe experience for all NHMU Volunteers. Volunteer responsibilities or tasks have been shifted or modified during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in response to changes in local and state public health guidelines. We remain incredibly grateful for the time, passion, and expertise that our volunteers share with us.

Volunteers play a vital role at the Natural History Museum of Utah. They work in every department of the Museum to help us to achieve our mission of illuminating the natural world and the place of humans within it. Whether you want to work behind the scenes with our collections, share your passion for natural history with guests, facilitate field trips for school kids, or put your organizational skills to work for our Registrar, we've got a volunteer position that will spark your interest and utilize your talents. Volunteer today!

Volunteer Impact

In 2019, NHMU welcomed over 715 volunteers. Together, they contributed over 43,500 hours of service to the Museum - the equivalent of almost 21 full time employees! Volunteers contributed to each one of our collections areas; they helped welcome thousands of school children on field trips; they talked to guests in our Past Worlds, First Peoples, Life, and Native Voices Exhibits; they traveled across the state of Utah with our Traveling Treasures program; they digitized our collections online; they cared for our living animals, and our landscape; they were citizen scientists. NHMU is so grateful for their time, their expertise, and their love of natural history. We love our volunteers, and we couldn't do what we do without them!

NHMU Volunteer Benefits

Volunteers at the Natural History Museum of Utah expand their knowledge of the natural world through specialized trainings, enjoy behind-the-scenes access, and interact with the Museum’s research staff. They broaden their social circle by making connections with fellow volunteers, Museum staff, and Museum guests; they contribute to scientific research, and make an impact in increasing scientific literacy and awareness in the local community, and beyond. This is a particularly great role for anyone pursuing a career in science, education, or nonprofit work. This role ensures a front-row seat to the innerworkings of a world-class Museum, and a great opportunity for career connections and mentoring!

In addition, the Museum offers the following benefits:

  • Volunteer t-shirt and nametag
  • Free admission into the museum
  • Two free guest passes for every 25 hours of service
  • Museum Membership discount
  • Discount at Museum Store and Café
  • Use of the volunteer lounge
  • Continuing Education programs, including lectures and tours
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Invitation to social and recognition events
