Prehistoric Ruins of Range Creek
Range Creek visitors often come to the canyon expecting an experience similar to a Mesa Verde visit and leave surprised by the sublety of Fremont archaeology. Ruins are very discrete, often no more than a partial circle of stone or a barely discernable color change in the soil. Even the archaeologist's working in the canyon continue to be surprised by new sites in unexpected areas. At least two Fremont granaries have been found in recent years that were in plain sight but that blended so well into the surrounding setting they had gone unnoticed. Visitors to sites should always remember how fragile ruins are. Never sit or lean on rock walls and avoid climbing over ruins or rubble mounds.
